This grittily provocative debut explores the horrors of self-harm and the healing power of artistic expression. After surviving a suicide attempt, a fragile teen isn't sure she can endure without cutting herself.
Seventeen-year-old Charlie Davis, a white girl living on the margins, thinks she has little reason to live: her father drowned himself; her bereft and abusive mother kicked her out; her best friend, Ellis, is nearly brain dead after cutting too deeply; and she's gone through unspeakable experiences living on the street. After spending time in treatment with other young women like her—who cut, burn, poke, and otherwise hurt themselves—Charlie is released and takes a bus from the Twin Cities to Tucson to be closer to Mikey, a boy she "like-likes" but who had pined for Ellis instead.
But things don't go as planned in the Arizona desert, because sweet Mikey just wants to be friends. Feeling rejected, Charlie, an artist, is drawn into a destructive new relationship with her sexy older co-worker, a "semifamous" local musician who's obviously a junkie alcoholic.
Through intense, diarylike chapters chronicling Charlie's journey, the author captures the brutal and heartbreaking way "girls who write their pain on their bodies" scar and mar themselves, either succumbing or surviving. Like most issue books, this is not an easy read, but it's poignant and transcendent as Charlie breaks more and more before piecing herself back together.
This story is necessary. This story is important. Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter is a black girl and an expert at navigating the two worlds she exists in: one at Garden Heights, her black neighborhood, and the other at Williamson Prep, her suburban, mostly white high school. Walking the line between the two becomes immensely harder when Starr is present at the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend, Khalil, by a white police officer.
Khalil was unarmed. Thomas cuts to the heart of the matter for Starr and for so many like her, laying bare the systemic racism that undergirds her world, and she does so honestly and inescapably, balancing heartbreak and humor.
Though constrained, the work nevertheless stands apart in a literature that too often finds it hard to look hard truths in In this roller-coaster ride of a debut, the author summons the popular legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Seventeen-year-old black high school senior Justyce McAllister, a full-scholarship student at the virtually all-white Braselton Prep, is the focus. While the novel intentionally leaves more questions than it attempts to answer, there are layers that still remain between the lines.

Elizabeth solander is a larger than life figure and she's grounded in something more meaningful, and you lose parts of that with this film. That's it. That's all that has changed. If we know anything about the movie industry, it's that Hollywood loves its sequels. That much is obvious from the way we're constantly bombarded with trailers, posters, promos, and news stories about upcoming franchise films.
But even as we're being inundated with info about retreads, revivals, and follow-ups, there are quite a few Part Twos and beyond that have successfully stayed under the radar. And while we may take it for granted that every superhero adventure and action blockbuster has more franchise filler to come, some long-gestating reunions or odds-defying continuations might totally surprise you. From indie comedies to Biblical epics, let's take a look at some of the sequels you didn't know were being made.
War Machine. Lee was not the first director attached to the film, stepping in for Terence Nance, who departed the production on good terms in July ofciting creative differences.
The film is set to hit theaters on July 16,almost a full quarter century after the first film premiered. James Cameron has been talking about Avatar sequels almost from the moment the first film exploded onto screens insmashing box office records and eventually becoming the highest-grossing film of all time a title it managed to hold for nearly ten years, until it was finally unseated by Avengers: Endgame in But believe it or not, four more Avatars really do appear to be imminent.
In fact, according to Sigourney Weaver, the first two have already finished shooting. What does it all mean? We thought this day would never comebut it looks like Ridley Scott is heading back to ancient Rome. Nearly 20 years after the original Gladiator hit theaters, Scott is finally making a sequel to the story of Maximus Decimus Meridius. Of course, old Maximus is busy walking through wheat fields in heaven, so what's the sequel going to be about?
Parkes, the film is going to start about 25 to 30 years after the original ended. We're thinking probably not. And with Scott at the helm, we're pretty sure we'll be entertained. As the crew of the Nostromo learned the hard way all the way back init's hard to kill an Alien. Despite generally positive critical reviews, Covenant underperformed at the box office, throwing the future of the franchise into uncertainty.Girl in Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow // Self-harm Talk
But following Disney's acquisition of Fox, both Scott and Alien 's new studio home seem eager to return to the sinister stars yet again.
As for what this third prequel might be about, one thing is for sure: it won't follow the format of the original Alien.
Speaking to The Hollywood ReporterScott talked about the need for the franchise to continue to evolve in order to succeed. This next Alien film, tentatively titled Alien: Awakeningis still in the very early stages, and none of the cast of Covenant the few who survived has yet been asked to return. Still, Scott maintains that it's happening, he'll be directing, and that the film is currently in the script phase. Young moviegoers familiar with bombs like The Adventures of Pluto Nash might be surprised to learn that Eddie Murphy was once the undisputed king of comedy.
And then, of course, there was Coming to Americaa comedy about an African prince traveling to the U. The first film in which Murphy played multiple charactersit made a killing at the box office, and some have labeled it the actor's " last great movie.
Anybody remember The Accountant? And as for the critics, they were pretty much divided straight down the middle, giving the film a 52 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In other words, this wasn't a movie screaming for a sequel, but Warner Bros. According to DeadlineBen Affleck is eyeing a return as savant sniper Christian Wolff, and he's not the only actor who could come back for a second installment. It appears Jon Bernthal might reprise the role of Brax, a rival hitman who's actually Christian's long-lost brother.
Plus, Warner Bros. At the moment, there are no details about the plot, but if nothing else, we know Ben Affleck will cook a few books and shoot a bunch of bad guys. It's been 18 years since audiences followed effervescent sorority girl Elle Woods to Harvard Law School in the bubblegum-hued Legally Blonde.
In addition to starring, she will also act as a producer this time through her Hello Sunshine banner. No director has yet been announced for the film, nor have any plot details been revealed, although sources tell Deadline that the threequel will be "much in the spirit of the first film," which saw Elle draw on her fashion sense, optimism, and strong sense of sisterhood to defy the patriarchy, lift up the women around her, and look great doing it.
Legally Blonde 's themes of female empowerment will be back in full force for Legally Blonde 3a film which hopes to appeal to long-time Elle Woods fans and new initiates alike. After the success of Hacksaw RidgeMel Gibson is enjoying something of a comeback. These slasher film heroines went toe-to-toe with sadistic serial killers — and lived to tell about it. Her basic argument is that although slasher movies seem to delight in the sadistic torment of female victims, they are actually providing the audience a point of identification with the last woman standing, which Clover identified as the "Final Girl.
The Final Girl is female, but she has a gender ambiguous name. She propels the plot forward with her investigative nature. She is pure, abstaining from sex and drugs. And she faces the killer in a final showdown, ultimately surviving by defeating him or through a third party's intervention.
In horror series, however, the Final Girl often dies in the sequel, paving the way for a new Final Girl to carry the torch. These characteristics are not set in stone, and the Final Girl has developed over time. The following list represents characters who fit into the Final Girl model, some more snugly than others. But all have left an impression in the genre. While the '90s were an important time for the resurgence of the slasher film, I Know What You Did Last Summer didn't add much to the genre.
Julie in particular is a relatively weak Final Girl, only surviving when her boyfriend comes to her aid. Psycho is one of the earliest slashers, with Lila Crane often acknowledged as the first Final Girl.
It's not a perfect fit, in part due to Psycho's unusual structure: We identify with Marion before she's murdered. But for her investigative nature and role as the last woman standing, Lila qualifies.
Jamie Lee Curtis had already established herself as a Final Girl prior to Terror Trainin which she's not nearly as dynamic as she is in Halloween. More on that later. But Alana still tries to identify the killer and ultimately survives the final showdown, albeit with help from the train conductor.
Final Girl traits: Female, investigative, audience's point of identification, defeats killer, survives. Urban Legend isn't exactly a modern-day classic, but it's one of the more memorable late-'90s slasher films, thanks to creative deaths and a female killer.
And while Natalie isn't as resilient as some of her Final Girl counterparts, she does at least deliver the final shot to the killer in the end. Without killing her, of course.
The 25 Fiercest Final Girls Of Horror
Sally is another one of Clover's quintessential Final Girls, which some might argue earns her a spot higher on the list. But Sally never fights back — she merely escapes. In the process, she's brutalized in a way many other Final Girls aren't, so she gets points for toughness even without taking Leatherface down.
Chris doesn't just overcome Jason Voorhees — she does a number on him. In the climactic fight, she stabs Jason, hangs him, and ultimately hits him with an axe. That might sound like overkill, but if you know slasher films, you know it's never enough. Still an impressive showing from Chris. Final Girl traits: Female, audience's point of identification, defeats killers, survives, killed in sequel.
Even with the more ambiguous original ending, in which it's implied that she's not going to survive, she makes it through the film, dispatching crawlers and humans alike with a badass pickaxe. Final Girl traits: Female, investigative, audience's point of identification, pure, survives, killed in sequel.
As the Nightmare on Elm Street series progressed, Freddy Krueger's victims were given more and more power to fight back. Kristen is one of the third film's titular "dream warriors," which puts her on a level playing field with Freddy. Of course, she still needs Nancy's help when it comes to actually defeating him.Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read.
